The Anti-Conservative
Conservatism is Anti-Christian, Conservatism is Anti-Capitalism
The greatest threat to our democracy, our freedom, and our prosperity is not terrorism (which is not that big of a problem), global warming (which is a huge problem), debt (a significant but very solvable problem), or taxes (it is low wages, unemployment, and a freeloading wealthy class - not taxes - that are destroying America’s middle class). The biggest threat to the United States is American Conservatism and America’s Conservative leadership. LAP is launching a new series of short articles on what Conservatism really is.

Conservatism Is Anti-Capitalism
Capitalism is a complicated concept, but the core principles of Capitalism are:
- If the market is open to everyone, many people will try to make a profit by making and selling a product or providing a service. They will hire employees to help them.
- Everyone in the market will naturally desire to make more money because the human desire for money is infinite.
- Producers of goods and services will compete with each other for customers by one or both of the following methods:
- Reducing the price of their product or service to attract more customers
- Improving the quality of their product or service to attract more customers
Capitalism died in 1980, when Ronald Reagan was elected.
Capitalism died in 1980 when Ronald Reagan was elected. American Capitalism has morphed into another kind of economy which LAP calls ‘Corporatism.’ The rules of Corporatism are quite different than those of Capitalism. Conservatism is the political arm of Corporatism.
Conservatism is the enemy of and the destroyer of capitalism. Conservatives have no plans to pay down the debt. Their plan is to cut taxes on the wealthy while they reduce spending – holding the National Debt at its current high level forever so they can forever blame “Liberals” for it and always use it as an excuse for government inaction.
In a Corporatist economy, the major participants are global and national corporations. In a Corporatist economy:
- Global corporations strive to control or manipulate supply by purchasing competitors, bribing government officials to receive favored treatment (especially anticompetitive intellectual property laws), conspiring to fix prices, filing frivolous lawsuits against competitors, and working with (bribing) totalitarian governments (like oil producing dictatorships) to keep prices high.
- Global corporations control demand with deceptive, misleading, and false advertising. They also control demand with proprietary technology so that, for example, an AT&T cell phone only works with AT&T’s network. The consumer is locked to AT&T unless she wants to throw her cell phone away.
- Global corporations undermine democratic institutions by bribing elected officials with money, campaign contributions, vacations, jobs for relatives, prostitutes, and highly paid speaking engagements in exchange for for favored treatment. They supporting opponents of those elected officials who would regulate them, file frivolous lawsuits against all levels of government, and supporting the most rabid government-hating Conservative “think tanks.”
LAP has no direct proof of this, but we speculate that corporate lobbyists deviously provide the money for a lot of the nutty street theater of the Tea Party and associated lunatics. (Our rule of thumb regarding global corporations is this: “Wherever corruption is possible, there corruption will be found.” Corporate executives are very cunning.)
Wherever corruption is possible, there corruption will be found.
- Global corporations avoid costly competition by purchasing competitors, suing competitors, and dividing the market among competitors (like health insurance companies do). Global corporations compete mostly in deal making, marketing, and advertising rather than by improving product quality or decreasing product price.
- Global corporations skillfully raise prices during a crisis for no economic reason: a freeze in Florida, political instability in Libya, a debt crisis in Europe, etc. They are not the naive players that Adam Smith imagined.
- Global corporations control wages by overworking existing employees without raising salaries instead of hiring new employees. The presence of a large unemployed class motivates workers to accept any kind of abuse to keep their jobs and it keeps wages low. Conservatives reliably oppose any increase in the minimum wage at any time or any place for any reason.
The Liberal successes of the past – the living wage, the 40 hour week, the 8 hour day, workplace safety regulations, laws against sexual harassment, etc. - are being dismantled by global corporations and their Republican handmaidens in Congress.
- Global corporations are directly responsible for the philosophy of falsehoods that is American Conservatism. Global corporations provide the money. Conservative ‘Think Tanks’ use that money to generate a self-serving phony philosophy called Conservatism and to give those self-serving lies the look and feel of respectability. Elected Conservatives and well remunerated speakers broadcast Conservative talking points to every possible audience. Many elected Conservatives probably believe what they are saying. Most of them are not very smart. They just imagine it to be a delightful coincidence that the Shining Truth of Conservatism happens very profitable to their wealthiest constituents.
American Conservatism has built-in rationalizations for neglecting the working class, the poor, the handicapped, the young, the old, the sick, and the oppressed. Conservatism teaches that anyone who wants to become a billionaire can become a billionaire by working hard. Ergo, anyone who is not a billionaire is just unwilling to work. Why be concerned with those who refuse to work? Even if you are handicapped and cannot work, your hardworking family should take responsibility for you. If you are old and sick and unable to afford medical care, then it is your fault for not working hard when you were young. If you are a working-class Conservative, then the reason, according to Conservative Propaganda, that you are not wealthy is that so much of your hard-earned money is stolen by the government through taxation and given to those who refuse to work. Conservative voters remind us constantly that they all work their ‘butts off’ for what they have, while welfare loafers live in mansions and eat at posh restaurants (paying with food stamps, of course).

Conservatism Is the Anti-Christ

The Antichrist is an imaginative speculation by both ancient and modern Christian theologians. Their very creative interpretation of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament is of an unnamed man who will appear in the Last Days before the end of the world. He will pretend to be a spiritual and perhaps political leader, but he will really be an impostor who will deceive many. He will resemble Jesus in some superficial ways. He will seem to be helping the people but in truth he will be a deceiver who cannot deliver salvation. He will be a false prophet.
We’re using the term ‘Antichrist in a slightly different way here, but we chose the term carefully. LAP believes that Conservatism is the Antichrist in this sense: Conservatism pretends to be the political expression of Christianity, and many American Christians who are not careful thinkers have been utterly deceived by this pretense. Many of them believe that somehow Conservatism is the political expression of the New Testament. They have confused the New Testament with Conservatism, actually thinking that a pious Christian must naturally be a devoted Conservative. They think - when they vote a straight Republicans ticket every November - that they are voting for Christian values and doing God’s will - but they are not. Conservatism opposes every Christian value, though Conservatism cunningly pretends the opposite.
We think that most Conservative voters have been made fools of by their leadership. Most Republican voters actually believe the carefully crafted propaganda that Conservatism generates.
Conservatism is not in any sense an expression of American decency or Christian goodness.
- Conservatism has no concern for the weak, the poor, the downtrodden, the old, the young, the sick, the pregnant, the ignorant, or the generations to follow.
- Conservatism praises competition; Christianity favors cooperation.
- Conservatism values money. The richer you are, the better you are. Christianity values only a person’s character and goodness; wealth, says the Bible, is a hindrance to spiritual growth.
- Conservatism says that we should outperform our neighbor, make more money than him, and rise above him. Christianity says you should love your neighbor.
- Conservatism says that selfishness is a virtue. Christianity says that generosity is a virtue and selfishness is a vice.

- Conservatism says that each of us should be a workaholic, spending long hours at the shop or office so we can get ahead. Christianity has no praise at all for such behavior.
- Conservatism says that the economic exploitation of others is a virtue. Christianity says that we should love one another as Christ loved us. Christianity says that we should treat others exactly as we ourselves want to be treated.
- Conservatism generates cleverly designed deceptive propaganda: ‘death panels’, ‘welfare loafers’, ‘weapons of mass destruction’, ‘frivolous lawsuits’, and many other lies. Christianity values truth. Christians are admonished not to lie.
Name a Christian value or a traditional teaching of the Christian Church and you can find a teaching of Conservatism that is the complete opposite of the Christian point of view.
Conservatism is the Antichrist.
